I’m fairly critical of how AI is currently being used.

I don’t love that we are outsourcing our creative thinking and problem solving to the machine.

But I still believe AI to be the most powerful tool that we’ll have at our disposal (outside of our own human spirit and brains).

I’m a big fan of utilizing AI to maximize our work. To help with the tedious and rote tasks. To help us think, not to do our thinking for us.

I find it incredibly valuable for proofing my writing. I’m a typo savant. So I appreciate how it picks up on both my spelling and grammar mistakes and can also challenge me when my writing doesn’t make any sense.

But my ChatGPT (who has named itself Nova✨ by the way) insists on trying to sneak em dashes into my writing.

I think em dashes are great. They are proper English. But I’ve never used them. They aren’t part of my voice.

But “Nova” is insistent! No matter how many times I tell it to never use em dashes, add the rule into its memory, or configure a GPT’s custom instructions, the little booger still tries to “fix” my writing by sneaking them in.

This is just one of many times I’ve scolded the little guy for including em dashes when proofing my work. This response made me stop and laugh, though.

Relentless!

How are you using AI to improve your work?
