This is Ian getting body slammed by a wave five minutes into our beach trip.
We’d been wondering how the little guy would feel about the ocean this year. He loved the sand last year, but he wouldn’t dare step into the water without Megan or I holding him.
So when he went under so quickly, I figured, well… that’s it. Guess we’ll be building sandcastles all week again.
Nope. The kid popped up, wiped his face on my shirt, and charged right back in. We could barely keep him out of the water the rest of the trip.
It was exciting to watch him enjoy it so much. It was also exhausting.
Sometimes you have to get knocked around by something you fear to experience something new.
And sometimes, as a parent, you have to let your kids get knocked down so they can figure out for themselves how to stand back up.
We vilify fear because it’s uncomfortable. But without fear, there’s no courage. And without courage, there’s no adventure.
